My name is Maya Rushing Walker, and I am a novelist from Honolulu living in a 1780s farmhouse in northern New England. I write fiction in international settings and with multicultural characters in several different genres…my favorites are YA and suspense, but I’m a sucker for a great historical, too! I love foreign cultures, food, all kinds of music, and I’m the nerdy, hip mom of four great kids, ages 22, 20, 15, and 15.
I’ve homeschooled my kids since 2001, but as a product of public schools myself, I don’t feel that any one institution or option has a lock on quality education. I’ve seen education done well and done badly, in every corner of the experience. I feel lucky to have had the chance to influence my own kids’ education to such a large extent, and I’d love to be able to help others out there who are trying to figure it all out.
Subscribe to my newsletter below for my essays on family and education, practical advice on what students need to get under their belts from middle school to high school, and what to focus on when they start thinking about college.
Join me on my fiction site for fun times in my slightly off-kilter world! I love to share my current Spotify obsessions and bits of my fiction in progress. I’m on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr…and on Wattpad I’m @studiomaya…let’s chat!
