Lest anyone thing we do nothing but listen to classical music and watch Shakespeare in this house, I wanted to announce that the next book in the fantastic Lockwood & Co. series came out this week! Jonathan Stroud is possibly our favorite author of books for young people. He knows how to write a truly scary book that is deep enough for a grownup to enjoy (by deep, I mean that it has a lot of plot, not that it philosophizes). I got to know Stroud’s fiction many years ago when I listened to an audiobook of The Amulet of Samarkand. Again, a great novel from a writer who knows how to push against the limits of “scary” and poses interesting moral and character questions.
I’ll take just a moment to complain about fiction for kids ages 12 and up–my kids are sick of romances posing as young adult fiction. Most of it is really tiresome, and my kids are looking for adventure, not for lovesick swoons. Okay, </endrant>.
My girls have been waiting for this book for a year! I will add that my college-age children are also big fans. Jump into the excitement of a truly fantastic children’s novel and pick up a Stroud book…if you haven’t read one yet, you are in for a treat, and just think, you’ve got at least half a dozen more to read after your first one is done.
