Summer’s here! Even in New England, where it’s been rainy and in the sixties through much of May and part of June, it finally feels like summer.
At The Walker Farm, we know it’s summer when the hay guys appear, with their loud, clanking tractors. First they mow down everything in sight:
Then, they leave everything flattened for a day or so. The grass dries and smells wonderful! We’ve noticed that the hay guys have perfect timing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it rain on the cut hay in all the years I’ve watched them hay, even though we are prone to some pretty spectacular thunderstorms at this time of year.
After the bales are all rolled up, we try to get out there so that we can climb on them. We have a busy schedule, so sometimes we get back from swim practice, only to find that the bales are gone. That’s disappointing…but we know the guys will be back again at the end of the summer.
